poetry contests are exciting. So are book sales. Friends of the San Francisco Public Library just completed their annual big book sale last Sunday. There were 25,000 boxes, with 40 or so pounds of books in every box, to be redistributed one way or another. Except for a few rare or first editions, no book cost more than $5. Hardback mysteries, fantasy, etc. sold for $1 each, paperbacks of the same for $2. At the end of the sale, representatives of the police department took as many of the remaining paperback genre books as they could load in their pickup, for distribution in jails and prisons. I was a volunteer, setting up tables, putting up books, answering questions, and it was fun. Thousands of people attended; some came from out of state and from Mexico to stock up. I don’t know how much money we made; it all goes to support various SF public library functions. The sale is over for this year, but will return same time next.
