I bumped into this site through the always interesting World Literature Forum. Backed by indie publisher, Canongate, meetatthegate.com seeks to become a cultural hub of choice. Interactive, innovative and new. From the intro (by the ever mysterious Gatekeeper):
Welcome to Meet at the Gate, a site that seeks to provide a dynamic and interactive forum for great writing, intelligent and lively debate, and recommendations you can trust. Although launched and hosted by the independent publishing house Canongate, Meet at the Gate is not a typical publisher’s website. Yes you can search the Canongate catalogue and find out more about the excellent and diverse array of books and writers we publish, but Meet at the Gate has much broader and bigger ambitions. It’s about the creation of a cultural hub, one that is totally independent in its spirit and content, a place with a particular focus on books, film, music and websites that will help guide you to the most interesting stuff around.
The site has launched an interactive literary world tour, that our readers may want to check out:

Our ‘City’ books Gatepost last week got us thinking more about world literature, and how much certain pieces of writing set in a single country really bring those nations alive. Here at Canongate we’re proud to publish books set all around the world, written by authors from all around the world. With that in mind we’re launching the Meet At The Gate Literature World Tour, providing you with a credit-crunch-busting round the world trip which you can embark on from your armchair.
The rules:
- Like a real-life round the world ticket, the LWT only travels one way. We are bound eastward!
- Every Gatepost on the LWT (except this one) will comprise reviews of books set primarily in one country.
- Anyone can join in — the last line of every review will list the next stop on the LWT.
- All you need to do is submit your review, and all selected reviews will be published in the relevant month of the LWT.
- You can review books in translation or in their original language, but please make sure that the primary language of your review is English.
- The LWT will go around the world with no regard for air sickness — we plan on circumventing the globe many, many times.
- Use the LWT topic and sub-topics to browse all the reviews.
To kick things off, our first stop will be Scotland (for the month of January). If you have a favourite book set in Scotland — fiction or otherwise — and would like to see your review on Meet At The Gate, do join us.
