shadowgraph 1: imagining the earth
(poetry detected in hendrik lorentz’s nobel physics lecture, 1902)
the present day? ‘in the mind’s case…’ the programmed air. the outshone sun. end–

its own circumstances? the magnetic can. (men raising triplets.) light grain, beam

Ride a tiger
You had a cigarette flame in your eye
Shining through your blurry eyeballs,
You were young, twenty and something,
Still not measuring life with number
of grays, and when they said, finally,
That you have to go you packed up
Leftovers of bread and common smile
Taking a ride on Bengali tiger’s broad back,
On the freaky carousel that was too fast
For you to leave the saddle or even jump,
Switch the place, find a fragile swan,
Or proud, glassy unicorn– born again,
on the carousel that was slow enough
to rewind all the mistakes you made,
the same mistakes, standing around,
patient like monks, evil-eyed, cross,
waiting for the carousel to stop.

Seemingly always in trouble with the law, all too ready for a fight, and deadly if crossed, Caravaggio was also among the most important painters of his or any era. His use of chiaroscuro was stunning for its dramatic impact and innovation, while his subject matter blazed new ground for in-your-face heresy. In short, he lived his life like a storm.
Art needs to move. It often needs to simulate motion in order to move you, the viewer. Artists for millennia have known that slashing lines, high contrast, and sharp juxtapositions of color and shape generally impact the viewer more than static scenes with nice verticals and horizontals. The Baroque Era pushed this concept further than any previous artistic period.…
